Folders

Overview

Folders are a simple and useful way to organize the content you find and save on PBS LearningMedia. With a free account, you can create and customize as many folders as you’d like. Organize your content by lessons or units of instruction. Create individualized folders based upon the interests, levels, or needs of your students. You can also use folders to curate resources and share them directly with your class or colleagues.

How to create a folder

  • From the left side navigation menu of your dashboard, click Folders (Figure 1.1).
  • Click Add a New Folder (Figure 1.2).

  • A popup box appears (Figure 2).
  • In the Name textbox, type a name for this folder. The name should be descriptive of not only the content but the purpose of the folder (e.g.: Poetry for 5th Period English Class) (Figure 2.1). This field is mandatory.
  • In the Description textbox, type descriptive text to add more context to the content (e.g.: This content is used to demonstrate to my 5th period class the influence of 20th century poets) (Figure 2.2). This field is optional but it is recommended that you add content to lend organization to your folders.
  • When finished, click Save (Figure 2.3).

  • Click the plus sign to the left of the folder to expand and access the folder's details (Figure 3).

  • Click the pencil icon to the right of Folder Name and Description to modify the name of your folder and the folder description (Figure 4.1).
  • The shareable folder URL displays (Figure 4.2). Send this URL to anyone with whom you want to share the folder.
  • Click View Folder to view the contents of your folder (Figure 4.3). A newly created folder will be empty until you begin adding content.
  • Click Delete This Folder to delete the folder and remove it from your site (Figure 4.4).

How to add Favorites to a folder

Once you have created folders, you can now begin adding Favorites to them. This section demonstrates how.

  • Go to your Favorites page by clicking your login name in the upper right corner (Figure 1.1) and clicking Favorites from the dropdown menu (Figure 1.2) or clicking Favorites from the left navigation menu of your dashboard (Figure 1.3).

  • All resources that have been designated as Favorites appear in the list (Figure 2).
  • All folders to which a resource has been assigned are listed beneath the resource (Figure 2.1).
  • Click the checkbox next to each Favorite that you want to add to a folder (Figure 2.2). You can click an unlimited number of checkboxes. You can also click Select All to select all Favorites in your list (Figure 2.3). Be aware that when you select multiple resources, they will all be assigned to the same folder.
  • When finished, click Add to Folder (Figure 2.4).

  • Each folder the resource(s) is currently added to is designated by a checked box (Figure 3.1).
  • Click the checkbox to the left of the folders to which you want to add the resource(s) (Figure 3.2).
  • You can create a new folder from this page by clicking in the textbox labeled New Folder and begin typing the name of the new folder (Figure 3.3). The folder will be added to the list of all of your existing folders.
  • When finished, click Save Updates (Figure 3.4).

  • The popup box closes and the folder(s) the Favorites were added to are listed beneath each resource. (Figure 4).

How do I rearrange items in a folder?

  • To rearrange items in a folder begin by opening the folder that holds the items you want to rearrange. Access your folders by clicking Folders in the left navigation menu of your dashboard (Figure 1.1).
  • Click the plus sign to the left of the folder that holds the files you want to rearrange  (Figure 1.2).

  • Click View Folder (Figure 2).

  • Click the grey patterned block between the up and down arrows located to the left of each resource and drag the resource to its new position (Figure 3). Release your mouse when the resource is in its new position. You do not need to click a save button, the order is automatically saved.

The items are in their new order. You can rearrange items again at any time.


How do I share folder content?

Each folder comes with a shareable link that you can email to anyone with whom you'd like to give access to your folder content. Once they click the link they can view everything in the folder.

  • Access the shareable link by clicking the plus sign to the left of the name of the folder you want to share. Once the folder is expanded, the plus sign becomes a minus sign and the shareable link, located next to the Folder URL label, can be accessed, copied, and shared (Figure 1).

How do I delete a folder?

  • Go to your main folders page and click the plus sign next to the folder you want to delete to expand the folder details. Click Delete This Folder (Figure 1).

  • Click Yes, Delete (Figure 2).

  • The new folder has been removed from the list of folders (Figure 3).
